When developing the initial design for a web site it is far easier to add some dummy text to the page than try to add the final content.

Adding random letters or repeating a sentence distracts the reader from looking at the overall layout of the page.

The letters in Lorem Ipsum are distributed more normally so it looks similar to readable English. It means nothing at all but helps prevent people concentrating on the content.

The standard passage has been used in the printing and typesetting industry since the 1500s.

This is the standard passage:

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum."

There are many variations on the standard text with humourous versions being written in 'Latin'.... The translations don't seem to convey quite the same effect.
